Design Considerations (Cont’d)
Redundant / Parallel Operation
Converter single wire interconnect via the Share pin
will result in load sharing within ±10% at maximum
load.
Voltage transients on the output bus during turn-on /
turn-off of the converter shall not exceed 1% of the
output voltage.
The outputs are diode isolated permitting N+1
redundant operation.
The diode isolation also
permits hot replacement of failed units.
Current Sense
With parallel operation, the output current of each
converter must be known.
The output current is
sampled via a small valued resistor.
This sample
voltage is converted into two outputs.
One that
represents the current in the converter output and
the other that provides current Share information for
the other parallel converter
Gated Bleed
To assure that an output over-voltage can be
properly detected, it is necessary to provide a bleed
path for the ORing diode, D2, leakage.
Since it’s
required that this diode have a very low forward
voltage drop, it has a substantial leakage at high
temperatures.
A static bleed path capable of
absorbing this leakage would consume too much
energy. Thus, the bleed resistance is activated only
when the circuit state indicates a possible fault
condition.
This happens when the error amplifier
output voltage falls below 3V,.
Layout Considerations
In order to obtain the maximum performance from
the converter, attention must be paid to the printed
circuit layout on the mother card. A ground plane
should be used to keep impedances low.
Wide
copper traces, preferably 2 ounce, should be utilized
for the power traces to accommodate high di/dt
currents.
Use low ESR capacitors for input and
output decoupling.
Output Capacitance Selection
Careful
consideration
must
be
given
to
the
characteristics of the external output capacitance.
The quantity, value, ESR, and location of the
capacitor(s) will have an impact on the performance
of the converter.
