一类为温度补偿类NPO电介质这种电容器电气性能最稳定，基本上不随温度、电压、时间的改变，属超稳定型、低损耗电容材料类型，适用在对稳定性、可靠性要求较高的高频、特高频、甚高频电路中。
二类为高介电常数类X7R电介质由于X7R是一种强电介质，因而能制造出容量比NPO 介质更大的电容器。这种电容器性能较稳定，随温度、电压时间的改变，其特有的性能变化并不显著，属稳定电容材料类型，使用在隔直、耦合、傍路、滤波电路及可靠性要求较高的中高频电路中。
三类为半导体类Y5V电介质这种电容器具有较高的介电常数，常用于生产比容较大、标称容量较高的大容量电容器产品。但其容量稳定性较X7R差，容量、损耗对温度、电压等测试条件较敏感，主要用在电子整机中的振荡、耦合、滤波及旁路电路中。
独石电容比一般瓷介电容器大（10pF~10μF），且电容量大、体积小、可靠性高、电容量稳定，耐高温，绝缘性好，成本低等优点，因而得到广泛的应用。独石电容器不仅可替代云母电容器和纸介电容器，还取代了某些钽电容器，广泛应用在小型和超小型电子设备(如液晶手表和微型仪器)中。
