Photomultiplier (CPM), a new ultra
high sensitivity optical detector
whichreplacesconventionalphoto-
multipliers (PMTs) and avalanche
photo diodes (APDs). This device
usesauniquedetectorprinciple,re-
sultinginacompactdesignwithul-
tra high gain, high dynamic range,
extremelylowdarkcurrent,andfast
response.

hishigh-performancedetectoroffers
fundamentaladvantagesforanalytical
instrumentationapplicationssuchas
emissionspectroscopy,flourescence,
atomicabsorptionspectroscopy,and
bioandchemo luminescence.The
CPMalsodeliversimportantadvan-
tagesinlifescienceproducts,indus-
trialandmedicalequipment,andhigh-
energyphysics.
PrincipleofOperation

he CPM, like conventional photo-
multipliertubes,convertsaverylow
light level into photoelectrons by a
semitransparent photocathode de-
posited on the inner surface of the
entrancewindow.Ontheirwayfrom
thecathodetotheanodethephoto-
electronspassthroughanarrow,se-
miconductivechannel.Eachtimethe
electrons hit the inner wall of the
curvedchannel,multiplesecondary
electronsareemitted.Thiseffectoc-
curs multiple times along the path,
leadingtoanavalancheeffectwitha
gainexceeding10

PMTs, the CPM improves anode
sensitivity by one order of magni-
tude,whileloweringdarkcurrentby
onetotwoordersofmagnitude.The
noiselevelshowsextremestability
over time, with no ”bursts.” The
extremelylowdarkcurrentresultsin
a higher dynamic range than con-
ventionalPMTsandextendsdetec-
tablelimitsformanyapplications.

mode,singlephotoncountingmode,
and in nuclear spectroscopy (when
coupledtoscintillationmaterialslike
BGO, LSO, Nal, etc.). PerkinElmer
Optoelectronics offers a choice of
window materials and photocatho-
des to cover the spectrum from
115nm(UVrange)to900nm(NIR).
