Functional Description
Power On and Enable
The OPTO-FireTM has an internal power-on-reset (POR) that initialises registers within the transceiver IC
prior to initiating the micro controller startup sequence. The module will be ready for operation after
approximately 600 milliseconds. The READY pin is set high when the module has completed start-up
and is ready for operation. An external RESET is provided to re-initiate the start-up sequence if desired.
The receiver requires approximately 1 millisecond of valid optical data before it achieves the rated bit-
error-rate.
Transmitter
Each of the four transmitter channels modulates the current through the corresponding VCSEL to pro-
duce an optical output signal. This circuitry includes waveform optimisation features such as pre-empha-
sis and duty cycle adjustment. The transmitter control algorithm implemented within the micro control-
ler utilises these features along with the optical and thermal sensors to ensure high optical signal fidelity
over the rated temperature range.
CML Inputs: A simplified schematic of the Tx input structure is provided in Figure 2. AC coupling
capacitors are provided within the module allowing common differential signalling standards to be used
without common-mode voltage considerations.

Transmitter Signal Detection
The Tx circuitry has the ability to detect the presence of a modulated signal at its input. The status of the
Tx signal detectors may be polled through the digital interface. The module may also be configured to
disable the VCSEL bias and/or modulation when a signal is not present.
Receiver
Each of four Rx signal paths consist of a GaAs PIN photo detector, transimpedance amplifier (TIA), a
number of limiting amplifiers, and a CML output driver. The receiver is optimised for use with 8b10b
encoded data, as commonly used in Fibre Channel, Gigabit Ethernet, PCI Express, Infiniband, RapidIO,
etc. The 8b10b coding scheme limits the consecutive identical digit (CID) run length to five and ensures
DC balance, limiting the running disparity over relatively short time frames. Correspondingly, the OPTO-
FireTM Rx circuitry enhances sensitivity and jitter performance by setting a low-end cut-off frequency of
~50-100 MHz. Some reduction in sensitivity and jitter performance will be observed when tested with
non-8b10b data streams, including pseudo-random data such as PRBS-7.
CML Outputs
A simplified schematic of the Rx output structure is provided in Figure 3. AC coupling capacitors are
provided within the module allowing the OPTO-FireTM to drive other components that support common
differential signalling standards without common-mode voltage compatibility issues.
