General Description
A functional block diagram of the OPTO-FireTM parallel fibre optic transceiver module is shown in
Figure A. The module provides high-speed electrical-to-optical and optical-to-electrical conversion
across four independent transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) channels. It is sealed for use in harsh environ-
ments such as avionics and space and features built-in-test (BIT) capabilities in support of high-reliability
and maintainability in critical applications. The key internal components of the module include a trans-
ceiver IC, a GaAs vertical-cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) array, a GaAs PIN photodetector array, and
a microcontroller. Sensors within the transceiver IC allow readout of the die temperature and the opti-
cal power level transmitted from each fibre output and received into each fibre input. The transmitter
optical monitoring is also used internally, in conjunction with transmitter pre-emphasis and duty-cycle
adjustments, to maintain high Tx signal fidelity across a wide operating temperature range.
