whichisthemaximumminustheminimumdatasheet
values of (tPLH-tPHL). The difference between the maxi-
mumandminimumvaluesdependsdirectlyonthetotal
spreadinpropagationdelaysandsetsthelimitonhow
goodtheworst-casedeadtimecanbeforagivendesign.
Therefore, optocouplers with tight propagation delay
specifications(andnotjustshorterdelaysorlowerpulse-
widthdistortion)canachieveshortdeadtimesinpower
inverters. The HCPL-4504/0454/J454 and HCNW4504
specifyaminimum(tPLH-tPHL)of-0.7soveranoperat-
ingtemperaturerangeof0-70°C,resultinginamaximum
deadtimeof2.0swhentheLEDturn-ondelayisequal
to(tPLH-tPHL)max,or1.3s.
ItisimportanttomaintainaccurateLEDturn-ondelays
because delays shorter than (tPLH-tPHL)max may allow
shoot-throughcurrents,whilelongerdelayswillincrease
theworst-casedeadtime.
TheLEDsignaltoturnonQ2shouldbedelayedenough
so that an optocoupler with the very fastest turn-on
propagationdelay(tPHLmin)willneverturnonbeforean
optocouplerwiththeveryslowestturn-offpropagation
delay(tPLHmax)turnsoff.Toensurethis,theturn-onofthe
optocoupler should be delayed by an amount no less
than(tPLHmax-tPHLmin),whichalsohappenstobethemax-
imumdatasheetvalueforthepropagationdelaydiffer-
encespecification,(tPLH-tPHL).TheHCPL-4504/0454/J454
andHCNW4504specifyamaximum(tPLH-tPHL)of1.3s
overanoperatingtemperaturerangeof0-70°C.
Although(tPLH-tPHL)maxtellsthedesignerhowmuchdelay
isneededtopreventshoot-throughcurrent,itisinsuffi-
cienttotellthedesignerhowmuchdeadtimeadesign
willhave.Assumingthattheoptocouplerturn-ondelay
isexactlyequalto(tPLH-tPHL)max,theminimumdeadtime
iszero(i.e.,thereiszerotimebetweentheturnoffofthe
very slowest optocoupler and the turn-on of the very
fastestoptocoupler).
Calculating the maximum dead time is slightly more
complicated.AssumingthattheLEDturn-ondelayisstill
exactlyequalto(tPLH-tPHL)max,itcanbeseeninFigure17
thatthemaximumdeadtimeisthesumofthemaximum
differenceinturn-ondelayplusthemaximumdifference
inturnoffdelay,
[(tPLHmax-tPLHmin)+(tPHLmax-tPHLmin)].
