One Small Footprint for OEM’s
From IBM’s line of MPEG-2 digital video
products, comes the introduction of a
single Multi-Chip Module (MCM) encoder,
the MM30.The components making up
the MCM are IBM’s existing Encoder Chip
Set (ME30).This single module encoder
provides a solution to OEM’s whose
mission is to provide high performance
and functionability within a small footprint.
IBM is also providing a microcode release
to enable users of the MM30 and ME30 to
control the encoding process through
Variable Bit Rate (VBR) encoding.
Overview:
The MM30 is fully compliant with MPEG-2
Main Profile at Main Level and extends
beyond that with support for 4:2:2 chroma
encoding. It provides all of the range of
functions and features of IBM’s standard
IPB Encoder Chip Set (ME30).The MM30
digital video encoder is an innovative
solution for a wide range of applications
that are board-space constrained.
The Encoder Footprint:
The MCM is 43.33 mm square and the
height is 7.2 mm.The encoder module can
perform MPEG-2 encoding within the
same amount of space as only one of the
single chips from the ME30 Chip
Set.All interconnections between
the three encoder chips within the
MM30 are tested and checked
within the module thus reducing
board design and test cycles.This
packaging allows for valuable
savings in “real estate” in those
environments that require creative
layout and design to provide for
functionability and performance.
Microcode Feature:
IBM is releasing code for theVBR enabler
on the MM30 and the ME30 encoder
products. The code release is a significant
offering for applications that require VBR,
such as DVD mastering and statistical
multiplexing for broadcast. It enables the
user to gather picture statistics which can
be converted into encoding parameters. It
provides the user the capability to guide
and control the encoder through input
encoding parameters on a per-picture
basis.Variable bit rate output is achieved
through this process based on user
requirements.
