Microprocessor System
Description
This document describes the first mem-
ber of the Alcatel Microelectronics
MTC-8300 Microprocessor Family. The
MTC-8308 8 bit Microprocessor is a
RISC (Reduced Instruction Set
Computer) processor with 31 instruc-
tions. It is optimized for use in ASIC
microcontroller applications. It is sup-
ported by a complete set of develop-
ment tools integrated in the Alcatel
Microelectronics MADE ASIC design
system. The MTC-8308 was originally
developed by Nordic VLSI under the
name "RISC". "RISC" is a regis-
tered trade mark of Nordic VLSI AS
(Norway).
MTC-8308 is a compact but powerful
core. It is available as a layout opti-
mized block cell or as a gate netlist.
The core size in the Alcatel
Microelectronics 0.7 CMOS is 2 mm2
and a configuration with 4096 words
ROM and 192 word RAM is only 7
mm2.
MTC-8308 is provided with a full suite
of development tools. ASM is a two-
pass symbolic macro assembler sup-
porting standard and user specified
macros. SIM is a fast interactive pro-
gram simulator, supporting debugging
facilities. A design kit hardware and
software environment supports real
time in-circuit emulation. A C compiler
supports the designer with a familiar
and standardized development envi-
ronment. A VHDL behavioural model
allows fast functional simulations within
a standard ASIC CAD environment.
Finally a One-day training course is
organized in order to give users the
necessary knowledge to use the MTC-
8308 microcontroller system.
MTC-8308 executes 31 instructions
divided into instruction classes
(Arithmetic and logic, program flow
control, branch handling, data trans-
fer, shift and rotate, carry flag and bit
copy).
ALU (Arithmetic and Logic Unit) instruc-
tions execute with operands from the
register- and constant file. Every ALU
instruction executes in one single clock
cycle. Two different data are read and
the result written back from/to any of
the internal registers in the same clock
cycle (3-address scheme).
A powerful tristate data-bus connects
the register- and constant file to data
memory (RAM), the ALU and the I/O
ports. 59 I/O addresses are available
for user specific usage. The first class
of I/O modules are the classical micro-
controller peripherals: watchdog,
timers, counters, UART, A/D and D/A
converters, I/O bus addresses can also
be used to extend the address range of
program ROM and data RAM (paging
technique). Another application is to
use slave arithmetic operators (parallel
multiplier, divider) to boost the compu-
