Current Limit Protection
ThePMB4000SeriesDC/DCregulatorsincludecurrent
limitingcircuitrythatallowsthemtowithstandcontinuous
overloadsorshortcircuitconditionsontheoutput.Thecur-
rentlimitisofhick-upmodetype.
Theregulatorwillresumenormaloperationafterremoval
oftheoverload.Theloaddistributionsystemshouldbe
designedtocarrythemaximumoutputshortcircuitcurrent
specified.
Input And Output Impedance
Theimpedanceofboththepowersourceandtheloadwill
interactwiththeimpedanceoftheDC/DCregulator.Itis
mostimportanttohavealowcharacteristicimpedance,
bothattheinputandoutput,astheregulatorshavealow
energystoragecapability.Usecapacitorsacrosstheinputif
thesourceinductanceisgreaterthan4.7H.Suitableinput
capacitorsare22F-220FlowESRceramics.
Maximum Capacitive Load
Whenpoweringloadswithsignificantdynamiccurrentre-
quirements,thevoltageregulationattheloadcanbe
improvedbyadditionofdecouplingcapacitanceattheload.
ThemosteffectivetechniqueistolocatelowESRceramic
capacitorsasclosetotheloadaspossible,usingseveral
capacitorstolowerthetotalESR.Theseceramiccapacitors
willhandleshortdurationhigh-frequencycomponentsof
dynamicloadchanges.Inaddition,highervaluesofcapaci-
tors(electrolyticcapacitors)shouldbeusedtohandlethe
mid-frequencycomponents.Itisequallyimportanttouse
gooddesignpracticewhenconfiguringtheDCdistribution
system.
LowresistanceandlowinductancePCBlayoutsandca-
blingshouldbeused.Rememberthatwhenusingremote
sensing,allresistance(includingtheESR),inductanceand
capacitanceofthedistributionsystemiswithinthefeedback
loopoftheregulator.Thiscanaffectontheregulatorscom-
pensationandtheresultingstabilityanddynamicresponse
performance.
VerylowESRandhighcapacitancemustbeusedwithcare.
A“ruleofthumb”isthatthetotalcapacitancemustnever
exceedtypically500-700FifonlylowESR(<2m
)ce-
ramiccapacitorsareused.Ifmorecapacitanceisneeded,
acombinationoflowESRtypeandelectrolyticcapacitors
shouldbeused,otherwisethestabilitywillbeaffected.
ThePMB4000seriesregulatorcanacceptupto5mFof
capacitiveloadontheoutputatfullload.Thisgives<500
F/AofIO.Whenusingthatlargecapacitanceitisimportant
toconsidertheselectionofoutputcapacitors;theresulting
behaviorisacombinationoftheamountofcapacitanceand
ESR.

Externalinputcapacitorsarerequiredtoincreasethe
lifetimeoftheinternalcapacitorsandtofurtherreducethe
inputripple.Aminimumof44F external input capacitance
