Thermal Considerations
General
ThePMC8000SeriesDC/DCregulatorsaredesignedtooperatein
avarietyofthermalenvironments,howeversufficientcoolingshould
beprovidedtohelpensurereliableoperation.Heatisremoved
byconduction,convectionandradiationtothesurrounding
environment.Increasedairflowenhancestheheattransfervia
convection.
Propercoolingcanbeverifiedbymeasuringthetemperature
atthereferencepoint(Tref).
ThePMC8000thermaltestingisperformedwiththeproduct
mountedonanFR4board254×254mmwith8layersof
35mcopper.
Calculation of ambient temperature
Byusingthethermalresistancethemaximumallowed
ambienttemperaturecanbecalculated.
1. Thepowerlossiscalculatedbyusingtheformula
((1/
η)-1)×outputpower=powerlosses.
η=efficiencyofconverter.E.g88%=0.88
2. Findthevalueofthethermalresistanceforeachproduct
inthediagrambyusingtheairflowspeedattheoutput
sectionoftheconverter.Takethethermalresistancex
powerlosstogetthetemperatureincrease.
3. Maxallowedcalculatedambienttemperatureis:Max
TrefofDC/DCregulator–temperatureincrease.
