AllPMC8000SeriesDC/DCregulatorshaveapositiveremotesense
pinthatcanbeusedtocompensateformoderateamountsofresist-
anceinthedistributionsystemandallowforvoltageregulationatthe
loadorotherselectedpoint.Theremotesenselinewillcarryverylit-
tlecurrentanddoesnotneedalargecrosssectionalarea.However,
thesenselineonthePCBshouldbelocatedclosetoagroundtrace
orgroundplane.Theremotesensecircuitrywillcompensateforup
to10%voltagedropbetweenthesensevoltageandthevoltageat
theoutputpinsfromVOnom.Iftheremotesenseisnotneededthe
sensepinshouldbeleftopenorconnectedtothepositiveoutput.
Remote Sense
Current Limit Protection
ThePMC8000SeriesDC/DCregulatorsincludecurrentlimitingcir-
cuitrythatallowsthemtowithstandcontinuousoverloadsorshort
circuitconditionsontheoutput.Theoutputvoltagewilldecrease
towardszeroforoutputcurrentsinexcessofmaxoutputcurrent
(Iomax).Whenthecurrentlimitisreachedtheregulatorwillgointo
hiccupmode.
Thecurrentlimitistemperaturedependent,i.e.thelimitdecreaseat
higheroperatingtemperature,theregulatorisguaranteedtostartat
IOmaxx1.25@Tref115°C.
Theregulatorwillresumenormaloperationafterremovalofthe
overload.Theloaddistributionsystemshouldbedesignedtocarry
themaximumoutputshortcircuitcurrentspecified.
Over Temperature Protection (OTP)
ThePMC8000SeriesDC/DCregulatorsareprotectedfromthermal
overloadbyaninternalovertemperatureshutdowncircuit.When
thePCBtemperatureneartheICcircuitreaches130°Cthecon-
verterwillshutdownimmediately.Theregulatorwillmakecontinu-
ousattemptstostartup(non-latchingmode)andresumenormal
operationautomaticallywhenthetemperaturehasdroppedbelow
thetemperaturethreshold.
Input And Output Impedance
Theimpedanceofboththepowersourceandtheloadwillinteract
withtheimpedanceoftheDC/DCregulator.Itismostimportant
tohavealowcharacteristicimpedance,bothattheinputand
output,astheregulatorshavealowenergystoragecapability.
Usecapacitorsacrosstheinputifthesourceinductanceisgreater
than4.7H.Suitableinputcapacitorsare22F-220FlowESR
ceramics.

Externalinputcapacitorsarerequiredtoincreasethelifetimeofthe
internalcapacitors.LowESRceramicsshouldbeused,themini-
muminputcapacitanceisstatedbelow.

Tominimizeinputrippleandtoensureevenbetterstabilitymore
capacitorscanbeadded,seetablebelow.
Considerthemaxoutputpowerinagivenapplicationandchoose
sufficientcapacitorstoobtaindesiredripplelevel.Makesurethat
theextracapacitorsareplacedneartheinputpins.
Thetablebelowisjustanexamplesincetheboardlayoutalsohas
effectontheresult.
Requiredoutputfilter
Externaloutputcapacitanceisalsorequiredtoreducetheoutput
rippleandtoobtainspecifiedloadstepresponse.Itisrecom-
mendedtouselowESRpolymercapacitorsorlowESRceramic
capacitors.

This is the output filter used in the verification and a requirement
to meet the specification.

Maximum Capacitive Load
Whenpoweringloadswithsignificantdynamiccurrentrequirements,
thevoltageregulationattheloadcanbe
improvedbyadditionofdecouplingcapacitanceattheload.The
mosteffectivetechniqueistolocatelowESRceramiccapacitorsas
closetotheloadaspossible,usingseveralcapacitorstolowerthe
totalESR.Theseceramiccapacitorswillhandleshortdurationhigh-
frequencycomponentsofdynamicloadchanges.Inaddition,higher
valuesofcapacitors(electrolyticcapacitors)shouldbeusedto
handlethemid-frequencycomponents.Itisequallyimportanttouse
gooddesignpracticewhenconfiguringtheDCdistributionsystem.
LowresistanceandlowinductancePCBlayoutsandcablingshould
beused.Rememberthatwhenusingremotesensing,allresistance
(includingtheESR),inductanceandcapacitanceofthedistribution
systemiswithinthefeedbackloopoftheregulator.Thiscanaffect
ontheregulatorscompensationandtheresultingstabilityand
dynamicresponseperformance.
VerylowESRandhighcapacitancemustbeusedwithcare.A“rule
ofthumb”isthatthetotalcapacitancemustneverexceedtypically
500-700FifonlylowESR(<2mW)ceramiccapacitorsisused.If
morecapacitanceisneeded,acombinationoflowESRtypeand
electrolyticcapacitorsshouldbeused,otherwisethestabilitywillbe
affected.
ThePMC8000seriesregulatorcanacceptupto8mFofcapacitive
loadontheoutputatfullload.Thisgives<500F/AofIO.When
usingthatlargecapacitanceitisimportanttoconsidertheselection
ofoutputcapacitors;theresultingbehaviorisacombinationofthe
amountofcapacitanceandESR.
