Description
The THMC45 is a H-Bridge, single-phase, DC brushless motor (BLM) driver and control device intended for use with DC
cooling fans. It includes a high-efficiency PWM drive topology with integrated LDMOS high-side and low-side drivers,
plus a PWM control input stage to provide the industry’s first solution to efficient speed control inside 5VDC cooling
fans.
This solution eliminates the need for power drive components on the main system board, reducing PCB
component count, PCB space, assembly time, etc. It also offers other advantages over the two commonly used fan
speed control methods: 1) adjustable external DC supply voltage, and 2) adjustable external PWM drive duty-cycle.
Unlike the external regulation method, the THMC45 high-efficiency PWM drive topology adjusts only the level of motor
Phase winding power while all other circuitry inside the fan obtains power from the fixed DC voltage fan supply. This
eliminates problems with loss of headroom to internal control circuitry at low fan supply voltage and the resulting
limitation of low-speed operation of 40% that is typical with the external DC voltage regulation method. The PWM drive
method employed by THMC45 also reduces fan supply power consumption over the external linear regulation method,
which has V*I power loss due to the voltage drop across the regulator.
Unlike the external PWM drive method, which disrupts power not only to the motor but to all internal fan circuitry, the
THM45 solution maintains all signal integrity with phase drive commutation and tachometer, while providing reliable low-
speed fan operation. This allows fan health monitoring over the full fan speed range.
The PWM frequency and duty cycle is determined by the signal present on the PWM pin. This allows controlling fan
speed by using a digital PWM output, such as the one present on the Texas Instruments THMC11.
The THMC45 has an internal Hall sensor amplifier and signal conditioner, locked rotor protection, and automatic restart
after a locked rotor condition. It is primarily intended for 5VDC notebook PC cooling fan applications that require the
RPM speed control, and tachometer feedback to all be sent over a single wire. The THMC45 also provides a sleep state
mode to eliminate the need for an external power component to disconnect the fan from supply during a system sleep
state.
