5. Start and brake
When driving motors such as optical disc spindle motors, stopping is performed by applying some form of braking.
In these applications it is necessary for the motor to decelerate briefly and come to a complete stop. This IC performs
the following braking operation in order to meet these requirements.
Braking operation
This braking circuit applies full torque reverse rotation braking (in the current limited state) directly after the S/B
pin is set high while the motor is running. After that, the reverse torque is gradually decreased (according to the
time constant determined by R10 and C12) at the points where the speed falls below the values listed below. This
operation brings the disc to a full stop.
f3H = fFG/32 (FG mode) where
f3H: Triple Hall input composite frequency
fFG: FG frequency when locked
Depending on the size of the disc and the motor torque, the following adjustments may be required to improve the
disc stopping characteristics.(Connect R10 and C12 with an appropriate value, and experiment.)
Increase the time constants if the motor continues to rotate in the forward direction after the braking torque has gone
to zero.
Decrease the time constant if the motor is observed to rotate in the reverse direction due to the braking operation.
A value of about 51kΩ is recommended for R10. In particular, it should be under 100kΩ
The brake circuit comes with a power-on-reset function. Even when an instantaneous power failure has occurred
while braking operation, it will continue the braking operation as soon as power is restored.
6. When power is on
When the power is turned on, a phenomenon where the disc rotates slightly, even while the S/B pin is set to high may
be observed (depending on the power supply startup speed). If this poses a problem, the situation can be improved by
connecting R1 and C3 (which need not be connected if no problem is posed). The motor will not run if the S/B pin is
kept low when the power is turned on. It will run if the S/B pin is first set high and then set low.
