DRIVING THE ANALOG INPUT
ThedifferentialanaloginputsoftheLTC1403-1/LTC1403A-1
areeasytodrive.Theinputsmaybedrivendifferentiallyor
asasingle-endedinput(i.e.,theAIN–inputissettoVCM).
Bothdifferentialanaloginputs,AIN+withAIN–,aresampled
atthesameinstant.Anyunwantedsignalthatiscommon
tobothinputsofeachinputpairwillbereducedbythe
commonmoderejectionofthesample-and-holdcircuit.
Theinputsdrawonlyonesmallcurrentspikewhilecharging
thesample-and-holdcapacitorsattheendofconversion.
Duringconversion,theanaloginputsdrawonlyasmall
leakagecurrent.Ifthesourceimpedanceofthedriving
circuitislow,thentheLTC1403-1/LTC1403A-1inputscan
bedrivendirectly.Assourceimpedanceincreases,sowill
acquisitiontime.Forminimumacquisitiontimewithhigh
sourceimpedance,abufferamplifiermustbeused.The
mainrequirementisthattheamplifierdrivingtheanalog
input(s)mustsettleafterthesmallcurrentspikebefore
thenextconversionstarts(settlingtimemustbe39ns
forfullthroughputrate).Alsokeepinmindwhilechoos-
inganinputamplifier,theamountofnoiseandharmonic
distortionaddedbytheamplifier.
CHOOSING AN INPUT AMPLIFIER
Choosinganinputamplifieriseasyifafewrequirementsare
takenintoconsideration.First,tolimitthemagnitudeofthe
voltagespikeseenbytheamplifierfromchargingthesampling
capacitor,chooseanamplifierthathasalowoutputimped-
ance(<100Ω)attheclosed-loopbandwidthfrequency.For
example,ifanamplifierisusedwithagainof1andhasa
unity-gainbandwidthof50MHz,thentheoutputimpedance
at50MHzmustbelessthan100Ω.Thesecondrequire-
mentisthattheclosed-loopbandwidthmustbegreater
than40MHztoensureadequatesmall-signalsettlingfor
fullthroughputrate.Ifsloweropampsareused,more
timeforsettlingcanbeprovidedbyincreasingthetime
betweenconversions.Thebestchoiceforanopampto
drivetheLTC1403-1/LTC1403A-1willdependontheap-
