toworkinbothType1andType2PSEdesigns,and
alsosupportsnon-standardconfigurationsathigher
powerlevels.
TheClassificationprotocolisexpandedtoallowType2
PSEstodetectType2PDs,andtoallowType2PDsto
determineiftheyareconnectedtoaType2PSE.Two
versionsofthenewClassificationprotocolareavail-
able:anexpandedversionofthe802.3afClassPulse
protocol,andanalternatemethodintegratedwiththe
existingLLDPprotocol(usingtheEthernetdatapath).
TheLTC4266fullysupportsthenewClassPulseprotocol
andisalsocompatiblewiththeLLDPprotocol(which
isimplementedinthedatacommunicationslayer,not
inthePoEcircuitry).
Faultprotectioncurrentlevelsandtimingareadjusted
toreducepeakpowerintheMOSFETduringafault;
thisallowsthenew25.5Wpowerlevelstobereached
usingthesameMOSFETsasolder13Wdesigns.
BACKWARDSCOMPATIBILITY
TheLTC4266isdesignedtobebackwardcompatiblewith
earlierPSEchipsinbothsoftwareandpinfunctions.Exist-
ingsystemsusingeithertheLTC4258orLTC4259A(or
compatible)devicescanbesubstitutedwiththeLTC4266
withoutsoftwareorPCBlayoutchanges;onlyminorBOM
changes are required to implement a fully compliant
802.3atdesign.
Becauseofthebackwardscompatibilityfeatures,someof
theinternalregistersareredundantorunusedwhenthe
LTC4266isoperatedasrecommended.Formoredetails

LTC4259Adevicedatasheets.
SpecialCompatibilityModeNotes
The LTC4266 can use either 0.5Ω or 0.25Ω sense
resistors,whiletheLTC425xchipsalwaysused0.5Ω.
Tomaintaincompatibility,iftheAUTOpinislowwhen
theLTC4266powersupitassumesthesenseresistor
is0.5Ω;ifitishighatpowerup,theLTC4266assumes
0.25Ω.Theresistorvaluesettingcanbereconfigured
atanytimeafterpowerup.Inparticular,systemsthat
use0.25ΩsenseresistorsandhaveAUTOtiedlow
mustreconfiguretheresistorsettingsafterpowerup.
TheLTC4259AincludedbothACandDCdisconnect
sensingcircuitry,buttheLTC4266hasonlyDCdiscon-
nect sensing. For the sake of compatibility, register
bitsusedtoenableACdisconnectintheLTC4259Aare
implementedintheLTC4266,buttheysimplymirror
thebitsusedforDCdisconnect.
The LTC4258 and LTC4259A required 10k resistors
betweentheOUTnpinsandthedrainsoftheexternal
MOSFETs.Theseresistorsmustbeshortedorreplaced
withzeroohmjumperswhenusingtheLTC4266.
TheLTC4258andLTC4259AincludedaBYPpin,de-
coupledtoAGNDwith0.1F.ThispinchangestotheMID
pinontheLTC4266.Thecapacitorshouldberemoved
forEndspanapplications,orreplacedwithazeroohm
jumperforMidspanapplications.
