General description of FM sound generator
"FM "standsforFrequency M odulation.
The FM sound generatorutilizes the higherharm onic wave produced by the frequency m odulation forsynthesis ofthe
musicalsounds
As use ofthis FM system enables a com paratively simple circuitto produce such waveform thathas a harm onic wave
including disharm onious sounds, itis possible to create a w ide range of sounds from the synthesized sounds of the
naturalmusicalinstrum entsto the electronic sounds.
The diagram below show sthe mostbasic configuration ofthe FM system .
The "O perator" refers to the section w here a sine w ave is generated and the com bination of the operators is called
"algorithm ".The operatorin the frontstage iscalled "m odulator"and thatin the rearstage "carrier".
Each operatoriscapable ofsetting the frequency and the envelope waveform.
The configuration in the above diagram can be expressed in the formula asfollow s.
FM (t)= A sin(w ct+ B sin w mt)
A :Am plitude ofthe carrier.B :Am plitude ofthe m odulator. w :Angle frequency ofthe carrier
wm :Angle frequency ofthe m odulator
In addition,a system called "feedback FM " isavailable to create a widerrange ofsounds. In thissystem ,the frequency
m odulation isfed back asshow n in the diagram in the follow ing page.
B iscalled "feed-back ratio".Using the feed-back FM function, itispossible to produce the stringstype sounds.
