Design Considerations (Cont’d)
FET Over-Current
This converter implements over-current protection by
comparing on-state voltage across the power FET to
the voltage across a pilot device.
If the voltage
across the power FET at the end of the conduction
interval is larger than the voltage across the pilot, a
capacitor is charged by a constant current source
during the following cycle.
If the over-current
condition persists for a number of cycles, the voltage
on the capacitor exceeds a fixed threshold, the fault
latch is set and the converter is shutdown.

The latch is reset whenever the input voltage falls
below the turn-off threshold or the ON/OFF pin is
pulled low and then high.
Time integration of the over-current shutdown
function is performed to prevent transient over-
current conditions from causing shutdown.
Output Over-Voltage
The output voltage of the converter is divided by a
resistor network and compared to a Zener diode
reference voltage.
This configuration is shown in
Figure 6.
When the divided output voltage exceeds the Zener
diode voltage, the converter is latched off. No time
integration of the signal is performed.
Output over-voltage is terminated by the removal of
power to the output. FET Q1 is turned off as well as
the power FET providing regulation.
The reference used for over-voltage detection is not
the same as the reference used for output voltage
regulation.
