Design Considerations (Cont’d)
Start Up Considerations
A normal converter start up sequence is shown in
Figure 5.
After Vin has reached its minimum
operating voltage of 4.65V, the Enable line is
allowed to go high initializing the start up sequence.
Vout will rise to 3.3V in 1.8 ms and the PGood line
will go high 6.4 ms later.
Softstart
A softstart function is implemented by regulating the
output voltage to a linear ramp when the device is
powered on. The error amplifier integrated on the
power ASIC is specially designed to accomplish this
function.
The output voltage rises linearly.
The
output rise time is independent of the load current
and no overshoot occurs.
PGood Signal
The PGood output signal from the DC/DC converter
stays low for a fixed amount of time after the output
of the converter reaches its final regulation value.
This allows the signal to be used as a system reset
by simply adding a pull-up resistor from the
converter output to the PGood signal. See Figure 5
for timing of the PGood signal.
The PGood signal is generated from the softstart
voltage.
Once the softstart voltage exceeds the
reference voltage it no longer controls the output
voltage, but it continues to rise.
As this voltage
continues to rise it is then used to provide a delay for
release of the PGood signal.
Enable
The Enable input is used to turn the converter on
and off. It operates from TTL levels and is active
when high.
If this input is not used it should be
pulled up to +5V through a 4.7K resistor.
In
applications where the +5V input voltage has a very
long rise time, it is recommended that the Enable
input be held low until the bulk voltage reaches
4.65V.
Output Voltage Trim
The output voltage trim feature is used to adjust the
converter output voltage over a range of -5, +8%. If
the trim pin is left unconnected the output voltage
will be within specified nominal limits. As shown in
Table 3, a resistor connected between pin 8 and
Vout will result in a reduction in Vout, while a resistor
between pin 8 and Gnd will cause Vout to increase.
The trim resistance should not exceed the values
shown in Table 3.
The trim feature is intended to be used for static
output voltage adjustment. The trim resistor should
only be adjusted while the converter is in the off
state.
After the adjustment has been made the
converter can be turned on via the Enable input.
Output Margining
Two inputs, Margin Select and Margin Voltage,
permit output voltage margining of the converter.
See Table 7 for a description of their operation.
