The frequency at which this circuit will oscillate is the frequency for which the total phase shift in the loop, introduced through the
amplifier and transmission lines, is some multiple of 2p. The oscillation at this frequency will be maintained if the magnitude of the loop
gain is >1 (the loop gain is usually made greater than 1 and the amplitude then is limited by saturation of the amplifier).
The frequency(s) at which the circuit in Figure 1 will oscillate is determined by the total phase delay introduced in the amplifier and
feedback path (for frequencies where the loop gain is >1). It is difficult to predetermine the oscillation frequency accurately as knowing the
exact delay in the circuit is not practical, particularly at microwave frequencies. Variations such as delay through the amplifier will vary
between devices, and MMIC bond wires can significantly alter the frequency. Figure 2 shows the same simple feedback oscillator with a
controllable delay in the feedback path.
If the amplifier is broadband, then there may be many frequencies which meet the criteria for oscillation, giving rise to unwanted spurious.
To eliminate these unwanted spurious, a filter can be placed in the feedback path. The filter will have the effect of reducing the loop-gain of
the oscillator to <1, for signals (that have a multiple of 2p delay) outside the passband of the filter. Figure 3 shows the same simple
feedback oscillator with a controllable delay in the feedback path, with the addition of a bandpass filter in the feedback path.
The addition of the filter also has a dominant effect on the phase noise of the oscillator. The filter characteristics dominate the ‘Q’ factor of
the oscillator, and the resulting phase-noise can be calculated by the following expression:
