Description
The Lucent Technologies Microelectronics Group
W9009 RF Transceiver provides a highly integrated
and cost-effective radio solution for wireless products
operating in the unlicensed 915 MHz industrial, sci-
entific, and medical (ISM) band. The low power con-
sumption of the W9009 makes it particularly well-
suited to handheld and portable applications such as
cordless telephones and wireless data communica-
tions.
The W9009 consists of a voltage-controlled oscillator
(VCO) with a divide-by-64/65 prescaler; an image-
reject transmit upconverter and RF output amplifier;
an RF low noise amplifier (LNA) and image-reject
receive downconverter; an intermediate frequency
(IF) amplifier and limiter with receive strength signal
indicator (RSSI); and control and power manage-
ment circuits. The use of image-reject up- and down-
converters allows the system to take advantage of
the economical filters available with a 10.7 MHz IF.
The on-chip VCO operates at twice the actual pro-
grammed frequency in order to reduce frequency
pulling due to RF leakage or strong in-band interfer-
ers. The oscillator output is fed into frequency divid-
ers (modulo 2) with quadrature-phase outputs for the
image reject up- and downconverters, and with
single-phase output for the prescaler. The prescaler
can be controlled by an inexpensive 15 MHz CMOS
synthesizer.
The transmit image-reject upconverter accepts a
modulated IF signal at 10.7 MHz and translates it to
the ISM band. The output amplifier supplies a 1 mW
(nominal) output level. This level is high enough to
transmit directly for narrowband applications. An
additional power amplifier may follow the W9009 for
spread spectrum or other higher-power applications.
The receive LNA has two gain states, selected via
the control interface pins. The image-reject downcon-
verter translates the received signal to 10.7 MHz and
is capable of driving a 330
impedance. The down-
converter output signal is filtered off-chip, and then
input to the IF amplifier and limiter.
The control and power management circuits allow
the user to select upper or lower sideband operation,
high or low LNA gain, the transmitter or receiver in
time-division duplex operation, a VCO-only mode for
synthesizer frequency settling, or an off-state for min-
imum power consumption. An on-chip voltage regula-
tor incorporates a PMOS pass transistor, eliminating
the need for an external PNP pass transistor. The
W9009 RF transceiver is available in a space-saving,
32-pin TQFP package.
The Lucent Technologies W9009 RF transceiver is
designed to be used with the Lucent Technologies
CSP1009 Communications Signal Processor in a
cost-effective, 900 MHz digital cordless telephone
solution.
