W9009 RF Transceiver for 900 MHz
Testing and Application of the W9009
Voltage-Controlled Oscillator
The W9009’s voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) uses a fully differential topology, with part of the L-C resonant tank
circuit on-chip and part off-chip. The VCO operates at twice the desired local oscillator (LO) frequency. This allows
frequency dividers to be used to accurately generate the quadrature LO signals required by the image reject
upconverter and downconverter. Operating at twice the LO frequency also reduces the perturbations caused by
strong signals in or near the operating band, either received from external sources or generated internally by the
transmitter power amplifier.

Figure 4. VCO Test Circuit
Figure 4 shows the active portion of the VCO as two amplifiers coupled through capacitors C4 and C5 in a feed-
back loop. The circuit oscillates when two conditions are satisfied. The first is that the gain around the loop must be
greater than unity (to start the oscillation, greater than unity gain is required; as the signal level increases, gain
around the loop will compress to unity). The second is that the transmission phase around the loop must be
360 degrees. Using the two amplifiers in feedback gives a circuit with gain over a very broad frequency range. The
parallel L-C network, the blocking caps C4 and C5, and the transistors in the amplifiers themselves set the trans-
mission phase. Capacitively coupling the amplifiers eliminates a stable operating point at zero frequency and
reduces loop gain at low frequency.
The resonant tank couples the outputs of the two amplifiers and is made up of the on-chip capacitance CINT and
off-chip components making up LEFF. At frequencies near resonance, the parallel L-C configuration presents a
high-impedance load to the amplifier outputs, which results in enough loop gain to support oscillation.
