Receive IF Amplifier and Limiter
The W9009 IF amplifier and limter amplifier take the receive IF signal from the downconverter via a ceramic band-
pass filter and amplify it to a constant amplitude which is sent to an FM or FSK demodulator. An additional ceramic
bandpass filter is required between the IF amp and limiter to set channel bandwidth and prevent regenerative insta-
bilities in the IF amp and limiter signal path.

Figure 7 shows the test circuit for measuring IF amplifier gain. The IFAIN and IFAIP pins are inputs to a differential
amplifier with an internal differential impedance of 3500
– j240 at 10.7 MHz. The external resistor R1 is used
to set the input impedance. When applying a single-ended signal, C1 is used to bypass one input to ground, typi-
cally with a value of 0.01
F. The input is internally biased, so C2 (1000 pF typical) provides a dc block. When driv-
ing the input with a 50
signal generator, R2 is set to 50 . The IFAVCC pin is bypassed with C3 at 0.1 F. The
IFAOUT is an emitter follower with an internal resistor to set its output impedance to 330
. When making measure-
ments with a spectrum analyzer, a C4 value of 1000 pF provides a dc block and an R2 value of 280
matches the
50
instrument impedance, with an 8.1 dB (power) or 16.2 dB (voltage) correction factor.
In the application, the IF amplifier is driven by MXOUT via a bandpass filter. The filter provides a dc block, eliminat-
ing the need for C2, and R1 is set to 330
. Also, IFAOUT drives a 330 filter directly, eliminating the need for R2
and C4.
