Receive IF Amplifier and Limiter (continued)
Figure 8 shows the test circuit for measuring IF limiter gain, similar to the IF amplifier. The IFLIN and IFLIP pins are
inputs to a differential amplifier with an internal differential impedance of 3800
– j230 at 10.7 MHz. The exter-
nal resistor R1 is used to set the input impedance. When applying a single-ended signal, C1 is used to bypass one
input to ground, typically with a value of 0.01
F. The input is internally biased, so C2 (1000 pF typical) provides a
dc block. When driving the input with a 50
signal generator, R2 is set to 50 . The IFLVCC pin is bypassed with
C3 at 0.1 F. The IFLOUT is an emitter follower with an output swing in excess of 1 Volt. It requires a high-
impedance load at all times. When making measurements with a spectrum analyzer, a C4 value of 100 pF provides
a dc block and an R2 value of 10 k
provides a resistive load, with an 23 dB (power) or 46 dB (voltage) correction
factor.
In the application, the limiter is driven by IFAOUT via a bandpass filter. The filter provides a dc block, eliminating the
need for C2, and R1 is set to 330
. Also, IFLOUT drives the demodulator directly, eliminating the need for R2.
