General Description
3.1
System Overview
3.1.1
RipTide System Hardware Components
The RipTide system hardware components are:
Audio Communications Controller (ACC or Controller) device in a 176-pin TQFP.
Audio Modem Codec (AMC or Codec) device in an 80-pin PQFP or a 64-pin TQFP.
Optional Modem DSP device in an 80-pin PQFP.
Audio Communications Controller (ACC or Controller). The Controller provides the processing core and interfaces for a
complete system featuring audio and communications. On-chip processor code may be downloaded into internal Controller
RAM using supplied utility software. The Controller connects to the host PC via a PCI Bus interface and implements 3 PCI
logical devices: Audio, Modem and Joystick functions. The Controller conforms to the PCI Local Bus Specification, Production
Version, Revision 2.1 with a 32-bit PCI Local Bus interface and 33MHz PCI clock support.
Communication between the Controller and the Codec is via an AC ‘97 AC-link.
Communication between the Controller and optional Modem DSP is via a parallel control and status interface and a serial
data transfer interface.
The Controller is packaged in a 176-pin TQFP (RACC010) and operates on +3.3V power with +5V tolerant inputs.
Audio Modem Codec (AMC or Codec). The Codec combines two coder/decoder functions, compliant to Intel Audio Codec
’97 2.0 Extensions for combo audio modem codec (AMC’97), into an 80-pin PQFP which supports two telephone lines
(RAMC002) or a 64-pin TQFP which supports one telephone line (RAMC001).
The Codec operates on +3.3V power with +5V tolerant inputs or on +5V power.
Optional Modem DSP. The optional Modem DSP (RDSP20) performs hardware modem and voice signal processing thus
reducing the host CPU processing requirements by about 50 MHz. The DSP is packaged in an 80-pin PQFP.
The DSP operates on +3.3V power with +5V tolerant inputs.
3.1.2
RipTide System Software Components
The RipTide system software components are:
Audio system software that supports applications for Windows 98 (WDM), Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0, Sound
Blaster Pro, Adlib/OPL3, MS DOS, or DOS box.
WaveStream 64-voice software wavetable synthesis or optional Mega WaveStream software wavetable synthesis.
V.90/K56flex modem system software that provides modem controller functions with either MMX-based modem signal
processing or support for optional modem DSP signal processing.

RipTide PC System Requirements
The minimum PC system requirements for a RipTide System solution is:
Pentium 200 MMX or compatible
Windows 98, Windows 95 and Windows NT4.0
32 MB RAM
50 MB hard disk space.

System Advantages
The RipTide solution moves both audio and communications functions from the 8 MHz ISA bus to the higher performance 33
MHz PCI Bus, leading to measurable CPU loading advantages and enhanced system reliability. The PCI Bus provides much
improved I/O bus loading and power management capabilities as compared to the ISA bus.
The scaleable RipTide architecture is designed to support:
Motherboard (desktop or notebook)
Custom form factor module (notebook)
PCI add-in card
