7.4
Host Joystick Interface
The Host Joystick interface may be used as a Target by the Host to access control and status of the Joystick Function
(Function 2).
The Joystick function uses a 4K-byte memory mapped address space that it may be located anywhere in the 32-bit address
range and is not prefetchable.
7.4.1
Digital Joystick Interface
For the digital joystick interface, the host is enabled to read the timer pulse widths directly (see 7.2.2.1). When enabled, this
feature saves up to 10% CPU MIPS by off-loading the host from constantly polling the joystick port, as in the analog joystick
interface case. CPU resource is saved because four embedded counters are used to sample axis data. The CPU reads the
axis registers for the necessary information as needed.
7.4.1.1
Microsoft Direct Input
Microsoft’s Direct Input architecture provides for a standard interface between application developers and the next generation
of input devices, such as Digital Joysticks. For joysticks in particular, Direct Input leverages the performance increase digital
joystick interface offer by removing the burden that polling and configuring special controllers place on the system and game
developers.
To support Direct Input, an enhanced RipTide Digital Joystick driver (RipTide Virtual Game Port) is provided to communicate
with VJOYD.VXD, which is the 32-bit driver that polls the joystick. This mini-driver supplies VJOYD.VXD with 16-bit axes data
(axes data is treated as DWORDs with values ranging between 0 and 65,535), and the ability to request data from selected
axes (requesting data from only the pertinent axes saves CPU time).
7.4.1.2
Host Register Definitions
Three special registers are established for digital joystick control and Direct Input support:
A digital joystick control register that enables masking of joystick ready signals, independent selection of axis reads,
and a wrap mode for continuous sampling of the axes counters.
The data register for the 16-bit axis read.
The button register for checking the state of the four joystick buttons.
