7.3.2.1
Modem DSP Solution
Four DMA channels are used to send DSP-based modem data and voice data from the Host through the PCI Bus, to the
Controller and onto the Modem DSP. The on-chip processor handles the data based on control information transferred via
two registers (modem data and voice control information). The on-chip processor uses the AC-link command/status interface
to control the Codec. Sample data is also transferred between the Controller and the Codec via the AC-link.
Signal processing is performed in the Modem DSP. The Modem DSP device transfers voice, data, and control/status
information to the Controller via three interfaces:
DSP Voice Serial (SR8) Interface
DSP Modem Serial (Modem A) Interface
DSP Parallel Interface
The Controller on-chip processor interprets commands from the Modem DSP Interface and uses the AC-link command/status
interface to control the Codec. On the Codec interface, the command portion of the information is handled by the SR1 (voice)
and SR2 (modem) serial shift registers and the data is handled by the SR3 (voice) and SR4 (modem) shift registers.
DSP Voice Serial (SR8) Serial Interface
The DSP SR8 interface is used to transfer 16-bit linear PCM record and playback voice samples between the Modem DSP
and the Modem DSP Interface inside the Controller. The SR8 serial interface consists of voice data upstream, voice data
downstream, bit clock and frame clock lines.
The SR8 interface is accessed from the PCI Bus through DMA channels 10 and 11. Channel 10 is for voice playback (data
upstream) from the Controller to the DSP and Channel 11 is used for voice record (data downstream) from DSP to the
Controller. The SR8 interface is used to transfer 32 bits of data every frame high and 32 bits of data during frame low period.
DSP Modem Serial (Modem A) Interface
The DSP Modem A interface is used to transfer modem data between the Modem DSP and the Modem DSP Interface inside
the Controller. The Modem A serial interface consists of received data, receive clock, transmit data, and transmit clock lines.
The Modem A interface is accessed from the PCI Bus through DMA channels 12 and 13. Channel 12 is used for modem
transmit data from the Controller to the DSP and Channel 13 is used is for modem received data from the DSP to the
Controller.
DSP Parallel Interface
The DSP parallel interface is used primarily by the Controller to control and monitor DSP operation. This 8-bit parallel
interface connects to parallel interface registers with read and write control. This interface appears as a series of addresses in
the PCI address space. Transfers to and from these addresses cause read/write transactions on the 8-bit Low Speed
Peripheral Bus (LSPB).

MMX-based Modem Interface
Four DMA channels are used to send MMX-based modem data and voice data from the Host through the PCI Bus, to the
Controller. The on-chip processor handles the data based on control information transferred via two registers (modem data
and voice control information). The on-chip processor uses the AC-link command/status interface to control the Codec.
Sample data is also transferred between the Controller and the Codec also via the AC-link.
MMX data and voice samples require sample rate conversion between 16 kHz and 48 kHz which are handled by the sample
rate converters inside the Controller device. Data samples are handled by DMA channel 0 and 1 while voice samples are
handled by DMA channels 2 and 3.
