DirectSound Acceleration
Personal Computer games using the Microsoft DirectSound standard are fully supported by the RipTide system solution.
RipTide meets the DirectX 5.0 standard and beyond. RipTide accelerates DirectSound via PCI streaming, digital mixing and
sample rate conversion in hardware. RipTide has been designed to support the Microsoft WDM driver architecture.

Digital and Analog Joystick
The Controller includes an 8-pin interface for dual joystick support. The four timer input pins (JAX, JAY, JBX, JBY) can
support two joysticks. The four button input pins (JA1, JA2, JB1, JB2) can support two buttons per joystick.
The end-user can connect a joystick to the RipTide game port and select the type of joystick to use via the operating system
control panel joystick icon. The RipTide drivers will configure the hardware to support analog or digital joystick interface,
transparently to the end-user. The default mode is set to analog joystick interface. The digital joystick interface is less CPU
intensive than the analog joystick interface. For digital joystick interface operation, DIrectX 5.0 software must be installed.

The inter-IC sound (I
2S) bus is a serial link, designed to handle digital audio data streams. The operating mode for the
RipTide I
2S interface is as a slave on the serial bus. Digital audio sources requiring a slave audio system include:

CD audio
SPDIF receiver
Zoom video

MPU-401 Interface
The MPU-401 interface is an asynchronous serial data bus with a data transfer rate of 31.25 Kbps (
± 1%). The data format is
10 bits with 8 bits data, 1 start bit, and 1 stop bit. This interface can connect an external hardware wavetable synthesis device
via the game port or a Waveblaster type header to the Controller, in order to send and receive MIDI control commands. The
Rockwell WaveArtist RWA030 hardware wavetable synthesis device has been optimized to support RipTide systems for
applications requiring hardware wavetable synthesis rather than software wavetable synthesis (WaveStream, Mega
WaveStream).

Advanced Power Management
The Controller meets all requirements of the PCI Bus Power Management Interface Specification Version 1.0 and the
Communications Device Class Power Management Reference Specification Version 1.0. In addition, the Controller supports
the PCI Engineering Change Notice (ECN), “Addition of 3.3Vaux Signal to Connector”.

WaveStream 64-Voice Software Wavetable Synthesis
The first software wavetable synthesis solution to be shipped by a major PC OEM, WaveStream offers unique features not
supported by other host based solutions — including DOS game emulation mode under Windows and real-time playback
support via an external MIDI device such as a keyboard. This allows the technology to be used for important real world
applications other than simple static MIDI music playback. WaveStream’s high quality music synthesis improves overall
gaming experience as compared to standard FM synthesis. WaveStream’s unique low latency response time (8-10 ms)
allows the technology to be used to support piano or other learning applications via the use of an external MIDI controller.
WaveStream is the only solution of its kind to give standard PCs this much performance - built-in support for Intel’s MMX
extensions, full General MIDI compatibility, 64-voice polyphony in software, reverb, 3D and a rich 8 MB sound set while using
less than 2 MB of RAM. The WaveStream synthesizer provides sound quality that is virtually indistinguishable form expensive
dedicated wavetable synthesis hardware.
WaveStream's new large 8 MB instrument sample library delivers high-impact music since it has the space to faithfully
represent the complete set of General MIDI instruments. This provides better all-around playback sound quality for everyone -
from end users enjoying their PC multimedia capabilities to professionals demanding realistic instrument replication for
advanced audio applications.
